A little break: Between lugging around 100lb sacks

8/28/2012

Today, last of the runs to David for fertilizer  before we start picking.  Basically until we swap 100lb sacks of fertilizer for 100lb sacks of coffee.   Hard work moving around 100lb sacks.

All rainy season we have  been fertilizing the baby coffee and the adult plants almost every month.   Each time  a slightly different mix depending upon the leaf color and how we think they are doing.

First one must work out what is required.  Initially the soil test gave the right indication, after that it seems to be guess work based upon an experienced eye regarding the color of the leaves and so on.

Once the right mineral deficiency has been identified, then the not so fun job of finding it and the logistics of transporting it to the farm.

As I am the only one that drives around here, that not such fun job falls to me.   If I am lucky, the magical formula is available already in a local sore,  or the next best thing - the very nice man at the Coop can get it delivered. If not, then down the mountain I have to go.

What an amazing little butterfly.  Two very different looks.  Black white and red when closed and all those different beautiful blues on the inside.   How beautiful.

Elderflower champagne on a rainy afternoon

8/8/2012

Mornings outside in the sunshine; Afternoons indoors.   Today, making elderflower champagne ......this is the rhythm of the rainy season and I am OK with that.

The flowers were picked in the morning sunshine, a gift from friends with lots of producing trees up the mountain.

Beautiful trades .......giving and receiving

Trading is a beautiful and unexpected thing.  With the price of foods rising, folks are using their initiative and avoiding the shops where they can.

This weekend I have had some beautiful gifts, tasted new things, and given away some of our farm surplus.

1.  A delicacy of a fruit, mar anon,   from the other side of the volcano and we sent back avocados.

2.  Mandarin lemons for chocolate nibs from Bocas.

3.  A novelty of some strange looking palm nuts with an intriguing mix of sweet, hot and bitter in their flesh and look a bit like a sweet potato on the inside cooked.

Life is good.  Much more to give away ripening on the trees and looking forward to some more food adventures.
