He has managed to find his phone. He calls his entire family, who arrive from around town. An ambulance is also called and by the time I arrive, is flashing its lights parked on the lawn. My worker is laid out like a corpse on a stretcher and wheeled on a trolley into the ambulance.
Yesterday was pay day. He might have had a little something to celebrate but no body knows for sure.
He goes of to the Regional hospital 40 km away in the ambulance with flashing lights. The relatives and other workers tell me he has surely broken his back and will likely be off work for months. I panic.
4 hours later he shows up sheepishly walking almost normally. It turns out to have been a muscular spasm. How embarrassing. Wondering if all Panamanians are hypochondriacs. Next time someone says they are dying I will wait and see.
